SYDNEY

It was a beautiful day in Sydney!  After sleeping in until 8 and eating a late breakfast, we made our way to the Opal Museum to learn about Australia’s national gemstone. Students saw a cutting demonstration and viewed a fossilized dinosaur that had become opalized.  Look for a few surprises when your student comes home!  Then off we went to Circular Quay for souvenir shopping before boarding the Captain Cook for our Sydney Harbor cruise. The kids enjoyed a delicious seafood buffet while taking in the sites and getting to know each other better.

Next we walked to the famous Sydney Opera House for our behind the scenes tour. We were fortunate to see places kept from the general public like scenery storage and stage lifts. As we toured the complex we learned that the construction didn’t go quite as planned. Mario, our coach driver, actually worked on the Opera House in 1971. Our expert guide entertained us with stories about chickens that flew into the orchestra pit and other interesting facts. The Sydney Opera House is an amazing feat of design and engineering. How exciting it is to see it up close and personal.

Next on the agenda was the Sydney Aquarium. The little duckbill platypus was a hit! – not to mention the dugongs, sharks, seahorses, and coral. The Lizard Lounge was the site for another filling dinner. It was great to hear so much laughter and animated conversations.  All four leaders agree—this is going to be an excellent delegation.  All is well Down Under! As they say here, No Worries!

AWESOME DAY

It’s winter in Australia! After eating an early morning breakfast, which included toast with vegemite, we left the hotel to meet the other half of our delegation at the airport. The delegates from Texas are very nice kids. I feel confident that the two groups will blend well together. We then drove through the rain and mist to Mt. Victoria in the beautiful Blue Mountains about 2 hours west of Sydney. After a period of team building activities and positive thinking exercises, we ate Aussie meat pie for lunch.  Everyone then suited up in helmets and harnesses and trudged a mile through forests of snowy gum trees to a rock face to repel down a cliff – 200 feet!  There were a few jitters, anxious looks, and shaky knees (mine included), but everyone completed the task!! And what an incredible experience it was!  Just imagine being suspended in midair 150 feet off the ground gazing upon the gorgeous Australian landscape below. It rained off and on throughout the day – and it was cold. Good thing everyone brought warm clothes.  It was cold and dark when we got back to the compound at 5:00 for dinner. The mob of kangaroos grazing in the grass didn’t seem to mind. (sorry for the quality of photo – too dark and rainy).
By the end of the day, the delegates were better acquainted with each other, have different mind sets, lots of self-confidence, and a new “I can” attitude to life.  We just finished bed checks and it was unanimous – today was an AWESOME day!
I'm having a very difficult time trying to upload the photos. Sorry about that. I only have internet service for an hour. I will keep working on this problem, but in the meantime I will post narratives.

The Adventure Continues

For dinner we ate delicious kangaroo steaks. I was impressed -- 16 out of 17 ordered kangaroo.

Parents, you can be very proud of student ambassador! What a wonderful group of students we have!
Tomorrow the Texas half of our delegation will meet us. Then we head up to the Blue Mountains for the Full On Experience. Keep looking for updates.

We arrived safely to very crowded Sydney airport and managed to get through customs and the quarantine area where the cute little snifer dogs greeted us. Sorry photos aren't allowed.

We were met by our Delegation Manager Ben and coach driver Mario
who whisked us away to Bondi Beach.

Thomas with an Aussie Coke.

We then walked across the famous Sydney Harbor Bridge.
